IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO PROTECT A CHILD: Tackling child labour at the roots

As Easter approaches, kids everywhere look forward to some delicious Easter chocolate. In Australia [or New Zealand] we are lucky enough to consume it in vast quantities. But in many parts of the world -- children -- who not only don’t get chocolate Easter Bunnies, but in fact, are sold, trafficked, often enslaved and always forced to grow this sublime commodity -- are paying the highest price.

Fairtrade Australia's response: 'A Matter of Taste' Report by Stop the Traffik

A report released this week, ‘A Matter of Taste’ highlights that certification systems such as Fairtrade are robust mechanisms to help end exploitation in the chocolate supply chain. While the report acknowledges the significant impact of certifiers in addressing critical issues such as child labour, the scope and brevity of the report does not fully reflect the extent of Fairtrade’s work into building a robust, comprehensive and proactive approach to address and prevent child and forced labour, including human trafficking.
